What is PAT testing?

PAT testing, or portable appliance testing, is a term used to describe the inspection of electrical equipment and appliances to ensure they are safe to use. While most electrical faults can be seen visually, others can only be found by testing. A visual inspection is still an essential part of the process however, as not all electrical safety defects can be found by testing alone.

A useful part of any maintenance regime is simply a brief user check (using a checklist and some basic training). However, a more formal inspection by a trained professional may also be required. This will depend on the type of equipment and the environment it is used in. PAT testing by a professional is especially relevant in the work place.
